| A Tale of Two Interns |

7/17/11 One is African-American, the other Caucasian. Black and white. Inner city and suburban. Rented home and home owned. Though not always, but in this case, poor and middle class. Two summer interns. Both love you with all their hearts, wanting to be your servants in every way who You've led them to become in their journey of faith. This summer is different, though. They gave their lives to serve RCM and River City Church. Both come for the same reasons--to glorify You. But each come to it from very different life vantage points. One from a storm called Katrina when his family had to leave New Orleans for Little Rock because everything they knew was either destroyed or simply gone. The other from a storm called difficult teen years. You brought these interns to us to mentor, and the best we can offer as mentors, is a safe environment in which they can grow and make mistakes, while the gifts and abilities you've given them bloom and flourish. It's a big undertaking, Lord, mostly because we mentors know the limitations of our abilities to help them to grow. I should probably start putting back funds to pay for their therapy after a summer with us. That was supposed to be funny, Lord. But when one is called to be in the place of growth You have assigned, it becomes a matter of obedience. It's a call for both mentor and mentoree. And, it's easy to see that it's a clear call for these two. They obeyed Your call to be in this place. After six weeks of the eight week summer internship, with a little coaching here, correcting there, a bit of leading, these two have not only shared the Word in up front preaching, but just this last week each of them, separate from each other, independent of me and other mentors, went into the RCM big room that was filled with the poor and homeless, found a person needing Your love, and well, long story short, each intern immersed the person You lead them to. You promised You would make Your people effective in making disciples. You, Lord, sent them out in twos. They went. They obeyed the call, and people have been saved. And that's not all. As You could imagine Lord, their excitement sky rocketed, and so, a couple days later, they teamed up, in their own initiative, went out into the 'hood, wandering around to pray with those desiring Your presence as well as experiencing rejection from those who didn't. They hit the streets to give a Word from You to the poor and homeless. Two brothers. Two very different worlds. But of the same Father. Both accepting Your call. Both obeying Your call. Both effective in bringing souls to You. All because of You, Lord. To Your glory. "Come follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:19, NIV |
