Peace Print E-mail

11/9/11 It caught me off guard when I walked by. I wasn't quite sure what it could be until I took a look. It came from under one of the tables inside the post office where I pick up RCM's mail a couple times a week. You know Lord, those tables that are a bit higher than your waist where you can sort through your mail.

He was snoozing, peacefully, Lord, without a care in the world. In fact, he had the sound of the low but steady grind of a distant sawmill.

Some might say, "Drunken stupor," or "Wasted again from a drug binge," or "Spent all his money on women," or "isn't there somewhere else he could go?" or "If he'd only get a job," or "My goodness, just look at that, what a waste of life!" ...

Okay. I've heard those labels many times. Certainly thought them myself. Probably said some of those things myself at some point.

Yeah, sure, sleeping in the Post Office, probably isn't the best place for a human to rest, but hey, I buy stamps, so it's okay by me for him to get out of the cold. Postal employees will probably have a different view.

Though homeless, maybe he was simply at peace in the storm. The storm of life.

Jesus was one time. In a boat. In a big storm. Sleeping. Peacefully.

And His disciples? Frantic? Certainly. Bailing water? Surely. Afraid? Without a doubt. Short of faith? Yep.

And Your disciples today? Too often we're frantic with life, trying to bring peace our lives by bailing ourselves out with everything but Your peace. Afraid of what life will throw at us and so we cripple ourselves before we ever get started. And, yes, Lord, depending too much on ourselves rather than having faith You--the Master over storms.

All of them.

My homeless friend sleeping so peacefully? I just let him sleep.

He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the wind and the waves, and it was completely calm. Matthew 8:26, NIV
