Often, we will have an interaction or experience and we do not know what the final outcome is, or if our efforts are wasted. However, once in a while, we do get to see a results, or another chapter in the story, possibly even the end of the story. Recently, a former client of ours passed away. He was one of our very first Hand Up Housing clients. Eric was living under the interstate freeway bridge in NLR when we got acquainted with him. He ate breakfast and lunch with us almost everyday and started helping out and cleaning up after meals. We asked him to help us with some special projects, and we realized that he was chronically homeless, meaning more than a year without shelter or repeated homeless episodes over three or more years. We’ll miss him and his big smile. However, Eric had a chance in this life to be cared for, to be a part of a church family, to live in peace and in comfort and in community. As a statistic, Eric would be viewed as a failure. He broke too many rules and was asked to leave our housing. But we didn’t give up, and Eric didn’t give up, and God doesn’t either. People who cared and would love him in a godly way and help him get what he truly needed. Let’s be obedient and leave the control of the outcome to the Lord. After all, it’s His kingdom, and they, and we, are His children. He is busy about His business. He is not wasting His efforts or ours. RCM began in 1989 at Silver City Courts (HUD housing community) as an outreach ministry of the Levy Church of Christ. Over the next four years several locations in North Little Rock housed this expanding service organization. In 1993, a house was donated to RCM, followed by the incorporation of RCM as a non-profit organization. The volunteer staffs of doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, and registrars volunteer their time to meet the medical needs of this community. The patient is examined by a physician who then prescribes appropriate medication. If the pharmacy has the drug in stock, the patient will get a 30-day supply. In 2007, this was expanded to three chairs with over 300 patients a year served through the dental clinics. Since that time, the number of dental patients served doubled to over 600 per year. River City Ministry served as the Homeless Day Resource center from 2006-2013 as Little Rock completed its new center. Beginning in 2013, River City Ministry’s social services department began managing HUD housing programs for homelessness prevention and intervention. The River City Run/Walk 5k all started with one woman’s idea. 20 years ago, a volunteer told us we needed a social worker on staff. She was right, we really did, but we had no funds to pay another staff member. This volunteer happened to be a social worker and offered to raise her own pay. So she started a 5k and raised her salary! All these years later, our 5k is running strong and is one of our most successful fundraisers. It just goes to show what can be accomplished with a dream and a lot of hard work. All proceeds support our goal of feeding, housing, and providing medical, dental, vision, and spiritual care for the homeless, marginalized, uninsured, and underinsured people of Central Arkansas. The work day is from 8am - 3pm Monday-Friday. Each day begins with a guided devotional time. Interns meet weekly with their mentor to ask questions, pray, and process what they are learning, seek advice and discuss how this experience is affecting them and others spiritually. RCM interns generally have Saturdays and Sundays off to rest and relax, spend time working on required readings and accountability sheets, and for personal time with God. There will be a 5k event on a Saturday when interns will need to work. River City Church of Christ is a sister ministry, some of the people you serve attend there. You are welcome to attend and assist with worship or Bible classes. Expectations • Maintain communication (email, text, phone) leading up to and during the internship. • Arrive promptly, be dependable and responsible, and stay accessible by cell phone while working. • Represent Christ at all times. • Make sure all rules and regulations are followed. Getting Paid • You will raise your own funds ($4,500 recommended) in order to experience being “sent out” as a missionary. Money can be raised through your network of churches, family and friends. You will receive $500/week. Behind that number are parents skipping meals so their children can eat, seniors choosing between groceries and medication, and hardworking neighbors relying on food pantries to survive. But together, we can change the game! There are a few ways to support. You can start by setting a giving goal for yourself, your office, group, organization, or church. Make it fun and host a Souper Bowl party and charge admission.
